The English for
Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL)
Program was established in the early
1960s. English for Speakers of Other
Languages is a required program for
students whose home language is other
than English and who are classified as
less than independent in English. It is
a Language Arts program that
incorporates all aspects of Language
Arts instruction, content, and language
development. The curriculum addresses
the following components:

Reading
Literature

Composition
-
Vocabulary/Word
Study/Language

Listening/Speaking/Viewing

Information
Literacy//Study and test taking

Culture
In addition to the
required core courses, West Miami Middle
School students participate in two
computer-based programs purchased
specifically to help ESOL students
achieve success. Each program
encompasses all aspects of language
acquisition. Each student using the
programs will have individualized
reading and writing instruction. The
students are eager to use the programs.
