The English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) Program was established in the early 1960s. English for Speakers of Other Languages is a required program for students whose home language is other than English and who are classified as less than independent in English. It is a Language Arts program that incorporates all aspects of Language Arts instruction, content, and language development. The curriculum addresses the following components:

  • Reading Literature

  • Composition

  • Vocabulary/Word Study/Language

  • Listening/Speaking/Viewing

  • Information Literacy//Study and test taking

  • Culture

In addition to the required core courses, West Miami Middle School students participate in two computer-based programs purchased specifically to help ESOL students achieve success. Each program encompasses all aspects of language acquisition. Each student using the programs will have individualized reading and writing instruction. The students are eager to use the programs.
