Mission Statement

The mission of the Language Arts Department at West Miami Middle Community School is committed to promoting and enhancing quality instruction in reading and writing. We believe that writing is not just an option for young people, it is a necessity. Students in every grade level apply similar language skills and concepts as they approach increasingly complex texts.

Students will experience instruction in reading comprehension, writing, listening and speaking on daily basis. Students read and write, view and discuss, interpret and perform in order to deepen understanding and, communicate meaning, and apply learning to other content areas.

We hope to encourage all students at every grade level to develop an appreciation for literature and to achieve success as literacy leaders in the future.

Our department’s focus is on the “11 Elements of Effective Adolescent Writing Instruction”:

• Writing Strategies
• Summarization
• Collaborative Writing
• Specific Product Goals
• Word Processing
• Sentence combining
• Prewriting
• Inquiry Activities
• Process Writing Approach
• Study Models
• Writing for Content Learning

The underlying principals of our mission are derived from our professional standards as defined by the International Reading Association, the NCTE Standards of English Language Arts, the Writing Next initiative, and the Language Arts Framework.
