The Reading
Department at West Miami Middle school
is dedicated to providing explicit and
systematic reading instruction to
students who performed at levels 1 or 2
on the FCAT assessment. Our goal is to
execute quality instruction for all
students needing reading intervention,
engaging them in the reading process and
scaffolding the reader from learning to
read to reading to learn; an essential
tool.
Our curriculum is
determined by the five critical
components in Teaching Reading
• Phonemic Awareness: Oral
Language; the foundation of reading.
• Phonics: From oral to written;
the relationship between letters of
written language & the sounds of
spoken language; systematic;
understanding of the alphabetic
principle; most effective when
meaningfully related to literature.
• Fluency: Ability to read text
accurately & quickly, recognizing
words automatically, & grouping
words appropriately to gain meaning;
voice intonation & use of expression
while reading is evident.
Automaticity/ Precocity.
• Vocabulary: Refers to the words
used in communicating effectively;
related to reading comprehension.
Includes listening, speaking,
reading & writing vocabulary.
• Comprehension: Reading is
meaning. Good readers are purposeful
& active, they self-monitor, & use
metacognitive skills. Active,
Constructive Process.
